Great bit of fatherly advice

Found this article and it's well worth a read...hit some high notes with me and I'm glad I'm on the right track by knowing these things so early on.

SportsDo

Found SportsDo through my daily reading. When I saw the new Apple add-on for your iPod with Nike's new piece of kit...I started thinking more about GPS and my PDA. I had seen some applications that would keep track of your routine via GPS and SportsDo does a damn good job of it! An example here shows a drive through Auckland and shows the start and end points and you can even play the journey showing speeds along the route.

The mapping is done by Google Maps and can even export to Google Earth too.

The software runs on Windows Mobile or Java.

The next step I guess is to have a bluetooth heart rate monitor to track speed, distance and heart rate together and you'll have the full package. I'm really impressed with the look of this site and will definately give this a try once I get a GPS bluetooth receiver. It will be great for my Bike rides. Then I guess I'll need TomTom for when I go travelling again...awesome for working out when Cab drivers are ripping you off!

Microsoft Forums

Just came across the Microsoft Forums on their web site via the WSSv3 FAQ site, I use Firefox as it's quicker at Tabbed browsing than Internet Explorer and displays mosts sites better than IE except for Microsoft ones! I can't believe they haven't got these forums working other browsers and also most of their own sites also! Atleast the Sharepoint team took the time to make it work in Firefox!

It's the only reason I use IE is to debug in Visual Studio and to visit Microsoft sites!

Sharepoint 2007 B2TR upgrade error

I followed Amanda's instructions to the letter and got results as described, but for some reason got this error on Step 11!

"Windows could not start the Office Sharepoint Server Search on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code -2147467262."

Oh yeah..."-2147467262"...I remember that one! Where do they come up with these codes?!? [:@] Anyway, I checked the System Event Log and found this little gem:

"Job 'Distribution List Import Job' failed after 3 tries and 180 second(s). Will not try again.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

I tried starting it again and got this:

"Job 'Distribution List Import Job' failed. It will be re-tried again in 60 second(s).

Reason: Failed to obtain crawl status.

Techinal Details:
Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.UserProfileException: Failed to obtain crawl status.
   at Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.SRPSite.IsImportInProgress(String contentSourceName)
   at Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.UserProfileConfigManager.IsProfileImportInProgress()

   at Microsoft.Office.Server.Administration.JobHandler.Execute(Object state, Boolean timedOut)

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

and again:
"Starting up database 'SharedServices1_Search_DB_6550d16c-23b6-493c-a92c-21c810deeed4'.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

"Job 'Distribution List Import Job' failed. It will be re-tried again in 60 second(s).

and then it appears to loop round these errors.

I tried starting up the Sharepoint Home and first time it came up with an error, but after I did the bits above it seemed to then work ok.

I tried starting up the Sharepoint 3.0 Central Administration and that appears to come up fine. I checked the version in Site Settings and it's Version 12.0.0.4407. So all seems well....the rest of Step 11 failed when I tried to Start the Search Service in the Operations page. I get:

"The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"

Is this a "Microsoft timely fashion"?

Anyway, the second time I tried to start it it worked. Seems like everything takes two goes! [:D]

Honestly, I'm really impressed with the new Sharepoint 2007, as with any product, especially in Beta I expect problems. From experience with RedDot, Hummingbird, M$ MCMS, M$ TFS  etc. It's the joys of being in the software business!

Microsoft Windows Media Player 11 beta 2

I've been using Windows Media Player 11 beta 2 for a while now, mainly to synchronise my music from my laptop to my miniSD card to listen to on my O2 XDA Atom. The only thing that really bugs me is that it's not true synchronisation, for example, it doesn't on sync pass back to the Media Player the play count or date last played. I use a set of Jabra BT620s bluetooth headphones which have volume, skip track and play pause on them, so i never touch the interface for rating songs as I'm listening to them on the way to work and at work.

There is mention of a "Reverse Sync", but I can't find anything about it in the Interface, Help or on the Internet other than all the reviews that are basically the same as the M$ site but cut and paste around a bit!

I wonder with the new Zune player coming out and rumoured mobile + video + music Zune device that this will push the very basic Mobile Media Player currently with Windows Mobile 2005.

I must admit that I think that Windows Mobile is pretty basic in regards to what you can actually do in most of the applications. They're gonna have to step up their game as Symbian and Palm stamp forward...I just hope Apple come back to the board with a new Newton...they were way too early to market when they first released that.

Windows Mobile 5.0 low on free storage space

Wanted install a new player called PocketPlayer by Conduits. But had an issue with space left on my O2 XDA Atom. Found Keni Barwicks blog post on it which changes where temp directories are stored ... e.g. on external miniSD storage. Which basically extends Fred Pullen's idea.

Want to see whether PocketPlayer does Play count on mp3 files...as I did some testing last night and it doesn't on Windows Media Player Mobile.

USB Thumb Card Reader

I've been meaning to get a USB Thumb drive for a while now and have been managing on my PDA plugged in transferring via that. Although that means that you need to install ActiveSync on each machine you plug into, which is not always practical.

I went on ebay and found a USB THumb drive card reader. IT reads SD, MMC and RS-MMC. I've got an adapter for my 2Gg MiniSD cards that fit my O2 Atom. So now I've got 2x2Gb storage...for AUD$8...that's a bargain and at a fast transfer rate too!

It's only the second thing I've bought on Ebay and so far I'm really impressed.

Team Foundation Server Mailing List

Found lots of talk from TFS community about a new Mailing List which Grant Holiday has set up in the East. I've never been a big fan of mailing lists due to the way I use my inbox as a kind of read and archive style approach in GMail or tag to action or await a reply. So unless I feel like reading the mailing list email it kind of either gets archived straight away or deleted. I'm going to be patient with these ones. After all I do spend most my day reading RSS feeds, so surely this is no different.

The only danger with this is that it's now another source as well as the RSS feeds to read things...will they be duplications of the RSS feeds? Maybe I will be able to subscribe as RSS to the email list archives?

UPDATE

Just found Jeff Beehler's blog article on how he wants the TFS community to communicate.

DotNetNuke 4.3.4

I've just updated jiggyjigs.com to 4.3.4 of DotNetNuke which includes an update to the DNN Store module to 1.0.1 from it's buggy v1.0.0. Straight away the main improvement is the speed of the entire CMS, it's lightning quick compared to what it was on at 4.0.2! What a difference a few builds make! I really want to get behind these guys and help them out.

Been digging through the source code over the weekend to get my head around the set up and how they are developing, testing, debugging etc. It's a very big project and so far I'm really impressed with how clean the code is.

Gonna primarily help the DNN Store Module team with some issues they are currently having, it's a great way to learn new techniques off others and also network with the .Net Community Internationally.

Sharepoint 2007 B2TR

Finally got round to downloading the new B2TR patches for MOSS and Office client. An awesome set of screenshots for installing WSS 2007 B2TR...very impressed, must have taken a while...but every man and his dog will be linking to it...good way of getting traffic ;-)

From reading blogs over the last week, there appears to be a lot of new stuff in there. Be good to have a good look round it all.
