SharePoint is not all of the problem, it's People too!

I have been writing an article for Arno Nell's SharePointMagazine.net and have been repeating some things I've said in User Groups over the last two years of working with SharePoint 2007.

The biggest thing for me is how oversold SharePoint 2007 is as a solution, for example, how Organisations can take it on without getting in expert help to implement it. EndUserSharePoint also has a post that picks up on this and I'll be interested to hear the results from Mark's requests.

It's a lot to do with Corporate Culture and Mark Schneider uses a great metaphor to explain that it's not the Hardware or the Software that is the issue...most of the time it's the "PeopleWare".

I'm just putting together the 3rd post in my series on Leveraging the SharePoint Platform for the magazine and hopefully I'll enlighten the community a bit more on my experiences and give some recommendations. It's just good to see other people on the same page!

SharePoint Error: HTTP/1.1 404 Connection: close

Had this little error recently and thought I'd blog about it just incase anyone goes Googling for options on resolving it.

HTTP/1.1 404 Connection: close Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2008 01:40:55 GMT Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 MicrosoftSharePointTeamServices: 12.0.0.6039 X-Powered-By: ASP.NET

clip_image001

In my case it was because I was getting an error in the Event Log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Windows SharePoint Services 3
Event Category: Database
Event ID: 3760
Date: 26/08/2008
Time: 9:55:52 AM
User: N/A
Computer: PER1WEB01TST
Description:
SQL Database 'WSS_Content_Intranet' on SQL Server instance 'database\sql01' not found. Additional error information from SQL Server is included below.
Cannot open database "WSS_Content_Intranet" requested by the login. The login failed.
Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\svc_moss'.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Basically the database had been restored by our DBA and for some reason had lost it's security settings! What was throwing me off was the fact that Central Administration was working! This environment was a farm environment that had load balanced Web Front End servers, I would recommend isolating calls to the URL using host files to hit one server to debug the problem on one Event Log on one server.

There are plenty of other resolutions out there for this error as well...it's nearly as common as "Object Reference not set to an intance of an object"!

Readify SharePoint Training in Perth, Australia

Since arriving in Perth Readify have noticed the strong demand for SharePoint services locally and have reacted quickly to this market need. Readify have brought me onboard as their SharePoint Senior Consultant as of the 1st September so Readify can better address the SharePoint consulting demand locally.

Readify have also initiated their own Readify SharePoint Architecture course internally so that they now have more SharePoint skills across their consultants to address the SharePoint demand nationally. Readify's newest Perth based Senior Developer – Hadley Willan – has been on this course and is now available, along with Jeremy to help work through your SharePoint requirements for clients.

To address the wider ongoing SharePoint skills shortage in Perth Readify will be running their Professional MOSS 2007 course locally between 23-26th September. This is a fantastic opportunity to get a couple of developers onto this course to help build your own capabilities around SharePoint, who will then be able to deliver more SharePoint solutions for your organization.

This course has a slightly different focus than other SharePoint training courses in Perth as it is more focused around the Architecture and Development skills required for delivering SharePoint solutions. Other training courses tend to focus on the administration of SharePoint. See link for info on the Readify course.

Places are limited, so help your clients to please book ASAP.

If you have any queries or would like to talk to me about discounts for multiple students for your clients then please give Andy Lamb a call on +61 416 299 132.

Joining the Perth Readify Team!

I've just accepted a position as a Senior Consultant at Readify and will be located here in Perth. I'm really excited about the role and having the chance to work alongside people I have respected in the industry for a long time: Mitch Denney, Joe Sango, Paul Stovell, Paul Glavich, Chris Burrows, Peter Sullivan to name just a few of the 40+ team.

RDN: Free, quick, high quality seminarsMy role will focus on my expertise in SharePoint Technologies and with the close ties that Readify have with Microsoft and the respect they have from the industry. I hope to expand my knowledge not just in the SharePoint space, but also going back to my .NET roots from some of my new colleagues in Perth: Graeme Foster and Hadley Wilan. For all your avid readers, don't worry, I'll be blogging about all these things for years to come ;-)

Watch out for a upcoming series on Arno Nel's new and upcoming www.sharepointmagazine.net web site.
