SharePoint MVP Chat on Wed 20th April

I’ll be participating in one of the period MVP chats next week, 20th April. Here’s Microsoft’s write-up and link to the registration:

Do you have tough technical questions regarding SharePoint for which you’re seeking answers? Do you want to tap into the deep knowledge of the talented Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals? The SharePoint MVPs are the same people you see in the technical community as authors, speakers, user group leaders and answerers in the MSDN and TechNet forums. By popular demand, we have brought these experts together as a collective group to answer your questions live. So please join us and bring on the questions! This chat will cover WSS 3.0, MOSS, SharePoint Foundation 2010 and the SharePoint Server 2010. Topics include setup and administration, design, development and general question.
Please join us on Wednesday April 20th at 9am PDT/noon EST to chat with MVPs from around the world. Learn more and add these chats to your calendar by visiting the MSDN event page http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/events/aa497438.aspx

This will be my first one where I’ll actually be in a sane time zone, the last one I helped with it was 4am for me!?!

It’s a great way to get tough questions answered by the panel and the panel is very diverse this time round which is awesome. Here are some of the (currently) scheduled SharePoint MVP participants:

Cornelius van Dyk
Dan Attis
Daniel Wessels
David Martos
Ivan Sanders
Jeremy Thake
John Ross
Kris Wagner
Mike Oryszak
Randy Drisgill
Woody Windischman
Zlatan Dzinic

First day at AvePoint

So I had my first day today at AvePoint. Was really impressed as over the weekend the whole company had moved from 8th floor to new 9th floor location. Everything was working great so kudos to the IT and HR team organising this!
Got to meet lots of new people today, I apologise in advance if I've forgotten your names by tomorrow ;-)

Typical first day morning, with a thorough induction into the Compan workings, filling out forms and having a good chin wag with my new manager, Mario Carvajal. Mario is the Vice President of Financial Services and Engineering Services. You may have seen him at SharePoint Saturdays etc. in the past. I'll be working extremely closely with him on opportunities and really looking forward to learning from him.
I will be initially focusing on my Enterprise Architect role which will entail a presales and a advisory role for Enterprise Customers in New York and New Jersey primarily.

US Business Culture
A learning curve I really hadn't thought too much about is the business culture of the US compared to Australia. Things operate a little differently here and will have to adjust my sales approach to this.

Training
My afternoon was spent switching my brain to sponge mode learning about the AvePoint DocAve Platform from John Peluso in the Training department. I was really impressed with all the collatoral for the training "brain dump" of the platform and all the suites. It's great to see such a mature outlook on training, compared to what I have experienced in the Service Integrator world.

Platform power!
I had the overall run down on the Platform and also on the Data Protection and Migration Suites. I really wasn't aware at the Enterprise depth and bredth of these Suites and how there just is nothing on the market that compares with them. I'm really looking forward to getting my teeth into evangelising this product with all my heart & soul, extending my love already for the underlying SharePoint platform! Watch this space!

How to pick which apartment in Manhattan

So this afternoon, we've been taken around Manhattan's Chelsea district by the broker we selected from Australia before we arrived. Essentially we've spent the last few weeks looking at listings to find the price range, floor plans and location we liked.
Today we visited 7 different locations that we liked. By the end of it at 18:00 I'd completely lost track of which place was which!
Decisions have to be made quick in Manhattan as places don't stay available for long.

TIP #1
Ask if you can take photos/video of the apartment you are viewing. A lot of places don't bother adding photos to listings because they don't need to, someone will view and rent it ;-) This makes it hard to reflect later.

TIP #2
As you go round, have a notepad and write down what you like and don't like STRAIGHT AWAY. Doing this at the end of the day is hard and you will get confused.

TIP #3
Have a list of criteria that is important to you for the apartment. Ours was:
- Floor to ceiling windows letting lots of light in
- View of river or skyline (higher than 20th floor so not looking straight at other buildings or tops of roofs)
- Lots of cupboards/wardrobe space
- Decent Shower & water pressure in bathroom
- Modern appliances in Kitchen
- Bike rack & Storage available

TIP #4
Ask for floor plans of the apartment you're viewing.

TIP #5
Take a A4 sized folder with you to hold all the paper work and brochures you get through the day.
We've not been too fussed about facilities like a pool room, shared entertaining area as we really don't think we'll use them. We may use the gym, although I suspect we'll register with a purpose built gym with classes and personal trainers anyway. A lot actually charge extra for these areas so always ask this.

The good news was that although we can't apply for a Social Security number/card until we've been here for 10 days (crazy huh!!?!), we can sign up for both Bank Accounts and also apply for an Apartment.

We're hoping to make our minds up on a place tomorrow morning!
